Les Miz Anniversary Concert Available on BBC Radio

By Andrew Gans
09 Oct 2006

BBC Radio 2 recently celebrated the 21st anniversary of the London production of Les Misérables with a special concert performance at The Mermaid.

The Oct. 8 concert featured the BBC Concert Orchestra under the baton of Stephen Brooker. Anthony Andrews narrated the one-night-only event, which included the current London cast: John Owen-Jones (Jean Valjean), Hans Peter Janssens (Javert), Sophia Ragavlelas (Fantine), Sabrina Aloueche (Eponine), Chris Vincent (Thenardier), Tracie Bennett (Mdm Thenardier), Jon Lee (Marius), Gina Beck (Cosette), Simon Bailey (Enjolras) and Ross McCormack (Gavroche).

Les Misérables — based on the Victor Hugo novel and featuring a score by Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Herbert Kretzmer — opened at London's Barbican Theatre Oct. 8, 1985, before transferring to the Palace on Dec. 4 of that same year. The original Broadway company opened in March 1987; the Broadway revival begins performances Oct. 24 at the Broadhurst.
