She Likes Girls, Exploring Urban Homophobia, Gets Lark Reading Jan. 9-13

By Kenneth Jones
09 Jan 2008

The Lark Play Development Center in Manhattan presents a BareBones presentation of She Likes Girls by Chisa Hutchinson, Jan. 9-13.

She Likes Girls "depicts two inner-city high school girls who fall in love in a dangerously homophobic climate."

The Lark was introduced to Hutchinson through its Open Access Program, where the play was chosen from over 400 submissions to be part of Lark's 2007 Playwrights' Week.

Hutchinson, who grew up in Newark, NJ, stated, "The immediate trigger for this play was the fatal stabbing of a 15-year old lesbian in Newark …but the play isn't about murder...it's more about the urban community, the urban family, and how they respond to homosexuality. People need to hear a voice of love and acceptance every now and then or else they'll just habituate the hate. Or worse."

BareBones shows "are simply staged, fully rehearsed public presentations of plays in the final stages of development," according to Lark. A BareBones staging "is the culmination of a comprehensive development strategy and 100 hours of rehearsal in advance of the public presentations."

She Likes Girls will be directed by Kristin Horton at the Lark Studio, 939 Eighth Avenue, scond floor.

Hutchinson studied theatre at Vassar College and at the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Center. Since then, her work has been performed at such venues as the Workshop Theater, NYC Theater Slam and Vital Theater. She was a recipient of the Molly Thatcher Kazan Memorial Prize in Theater and a finalist in the New Generation Playwriting Competition. Most recently, she ventured into screenwriting and earned semi-finalist status in an International Writing Competition sponsored by Talent Scout and WriteMovies.com. She teaches playwriting and English lit at Sage Hill School in Orange County, CA. She was recently nominated for a Wasserstein Prize.

According to Lark producing director John Eisner, "Lark's programs are designed to create an arc of development and we look forward to expanding our support of She Likes Girls from the Playwrights' Week reading to the three-week BareBones program. Though Hutchinson deals with critically important social themes in this play, its humanity shines through in its delightfully mischievous theatricality. She is a brilliantly intelligent and skillful writer, young, funny, and glowing with compassion. She's the kind of writer the theatre of the future is going to need."

Tickets are $15 ($10 students) and may be purchased by calling (866) 811-4111. For more information visit www.larktheatre.org.
