Brandi Burkhardt (Sophie in Mamma Mia!) chooses: Haru

In Times Square you wouldn’t expect to find a Japanese birch forest—or such a cosmopolitan restaurant that appeals to both Asian fusion connoisseurs and first-timers. At this split-level branch of the Haru restaurant group, smartly-priced sushi and sashimi and succulent Japanese dishes are supervised by executive chef Norihiko Aratake, who maintains, “We honor tradition but also play to contemporary tastes.” Among prepared-to-order rolls, choose between the Hatsu Yume (snow crab, asparagus and cucumber) or Super Dynamite (tuna and freshwater eel tempura). Appetizers include king crab dumplings, wasabi shumai with two kinds of caviar, yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and white tuna tataki. Haru has an extensive sake and wine selection, with 20 wines by the glass, Japanese beers and specialty drinks.
