This Mexican magnet is so entrenched in the theatre area, it weathered a recent neighborhood closing-down due to a construction mishap without batting a serape. Back on the Broadway scene with full fajitas flying, it's still the place to go if you like your South-of-the-border fare served without fills by people who know what it's all about (Owner and chef Tony believes in hands-on cookery as well as management; his on-scene presence is a constant and reliable barometer of what you can anticipate by way of quality -- and that goes for the perfection-plus margaritas and sangira, too. Wall-to-wall photography blow-ups of famous, vintage politicos and banditos (along with appropriate newspaper facimiles of their exploits right on the menu) add zest and color; while a special kids' menu is a right-on inducement worth inquiring about when you make your reservation.

Celebrity Choice Review
Roger Robinson (Bynum Walker in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone) chooses: Viva Pancho
As its name implies, executive chef Antonio Martinez’s Viva Pancho pays tribute to Pancho Villa, the infamous Mexican bandito and people’s hero. Among colorful Diego Rivera prints, there are historic Villa photos and the menu contains coverage from The New York Times. Viva Pancho’s popular with tourists and locals, because, Veteran chef Gustavo Diaz says, “We're affordable, without skimping. I use only the best—cilantro, jalapeños, smoked chipotles, chili sauces. Here, you never leave hungry.” If it’s Mexican, it’s here: arroz con pollo, burritos, enchiladas, guacamole, tostadas—and a house specialty, mole poblano (chicken in chocolate sauce). For dessert, try a sopapilla à la mode with honey and cinnamon. The fully-stocked bar delivers margaritas and sangria by glass or pitcher, wine by bottle and glass, and Mexican beers, including Dos Equis.
